Your Strathcona Specialist...

Your real estate needs are important to me. What sort of neighbourhood will best meet your expectations? Every neighbourhood has a story…

Growing out of a collection of shacks and smaller buildings that surrounded the Hastings Mill, Strathcona is one of Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhoods. It is bounded by Hastings Street to Great Northern Way and from Main Street to Clark Drive.

What’s in a Name?

The neighbourhood was known as the "East End" until the 1950’s. That’s when the city planners began redeveloping the area and it was given the same name as the school: Strathcona. The name remained, but the residents in the area rallied together to put a halt to further changes. If plans hadn’t been stopped there would have been a freeway through the inner city and Historical Gastown and Chinatown would have been destroyed.

Distinctive Locale

Strathcona is a distinct blend of people, history and design. Here you will find houses, townhouses and apartment. Your neighbours may be practicing Tai Chi in the park or strolling in the community garden.

The largest concentration of 19th and early 20th century buildings in Vancouver can be found in this neighbourhood. In fact, in 1986, the areas of Pender and Prior Streets, Campbell and Jackson Avenues were declared a character area. Styles range from little cottages and modest homes to larger ‘Queen Anne’ style homes.
